James Dean Torrez was born June 12, 1959 to Pete and Jacqueline (Jackie) Torrez in Sterling, Colorado. He attended school in Sterling until 4th grade when he moved to Fort Lupton, Colorado. He graduated from Fort Lupton High School in 1977. He joined the United States Air Force and served for two years and was stationed at Whiteman Air Force Base and then in Korea as an MP with Security Police. While stationed in Korea he achieved his first degree black belt in Hapkido.
He started his 36 year law enforcement career as a reserve for the Brighton Police Department and was later hired by Northglenn Police Department where he graduated from CLETA police academy in 1981. He would later work for the Ft. Lupton Police Department and become Chief of Police for the Frederick Police Department. He later worked for the Platteville Police Department where he retired in 2016. He passionately loved training and ran his own business teaching self defense, firearms, and defensive tactics for 30 years.
He is survived by his wife Brenda Kittilson, Step-sons Jason (Suzette) Goecke, Jared (Jen) Goecke; brother Pete jr.(Judy) Torrez; Sister Roseanne (Damon) Floyd. Three grandchildren; Ivan Goecke, Mason Simms, and Ashtyn Goecke, numerous aunts, uncles, nephews, nieces, cousins and countless law enforcement friends and colleagues. He is preceded in death by his parents Pete and Jackie, sister Cindy (Ted) Engle, and nephew Pete Torrez III.
