Bruce Becker Obituary

Bruce Becker passed away at his home at the age of 89. He was born at his grandparents’ home in Waubay, South Dakota and was raised in Aberdeen, where he attended St. Mary’s and Central High School. Upon graduation in 1950 he received the school’s business award and job at REA (Rural Electrification Assoc.) The Korean War however subjected him to the draft and he chose to enlist for four years in the US-Air Force in 1951. He was trained in Electronics, Radar and Communication Equipment at Kessler AFB in Biloxi, Mississippi and assigned to the Strategic Air Command’s B36 bomber base at Fairchild AFB in Spokane, Washington. He received advanced training while achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant and supervised GCA (ground control approach radar) instillation which kept the B36 atom bomb laden planes aloft 24/7 during the Cold War.

Upon discharge he started his 30-year career in the Computer/Peripheral industry with a job as a Computer Technician at Remington Rand Univac. After training in Philadelphia, he was assigned to the Univac II Development project in St. Paul Minnesota and married Patricia Zacher of Aberdeen in 1956. Subsequent assignments were in Boston, Detroit, Toronto, and London, Canada prior to joining General Electric’s Computer Division in Phoenix, Arizona. Subsequent assignments in San Francisco and Los Angeles as Regional Technician Specialist and then back to Phoenix to assume the position of Eastern Region Technical Support and Depot Manager in Hartford, Connecticut followed by Atlantic District Field Engineering Manager headquartered in Philadelphia, with General Electric’s with largest computer installed base.

He later joined Telex as Eastern Region Field Manager in New York, Electronic Memories & Magnetics as Field Engineering Director in California and in 1974 joined StorageTek in Louisville, Colorado serving in senior management positions until he retired in 1986 as did Patricia to spend more time with each other and family.

He is survived by hi spouse of 65 years, Patricia, along by four children and four grandchildren.
