Donald Egan Obituary

Donald was born in Denver, Colorado and was raised on a farm in Commerce City, CO (Central Adams County). He graduated from Brighton High School in 1948. He served in the US Army during the Korean Conflict, December 1952-July 1953. Donald lived and farmed on the family farm in Adams County until the City of  Denver bought part of the farm in September 1999 for Denver International Airport. After Denver bought the land with the farmhouse, Donald and siblings Stanley and Carolyn moved to Henderson.

Donald and his brother, Stanley, farmed for many years while also working at The American Can Company. Donald worked swing shift and Stanley worked days so there was always one of them on the farm. When the Can Company closed, he went to work for Payless Cashways Lumber/Hugh M Woods. He enjoyed helping customers and training smart kids. He did not tolerate goofing off or being lazy, but he enjoyed a good joke or funny story on the job. He was the employee that never missed work or was late.

Donald didn’t enjoy big crowds, but he enjoyed one on one conversations with just about anyone. He always had a joke or funny story to share.

He was a much-loved uncle to his nieces and nephews. He enjoyed them tagging along at the farm and coming to visit after he moved to Henderson.

In retirement, he followed the market like it was his job. He was an avid reader of books, magazines and other periodicals.

He enjoyed walking around the neighborhood up until this past year. He was the helper neighbor, doing their chores (getting the mail, feeding pets and livestock) while they were out of town. In the last 15 years of his life, he enjoyed gardening and caring for the home he and his older sister Carolyn shared.

Donald was a significant help around the house to Carolyn. Growing up in a traditional home where the boys worked outside and the girls inside, he nonetheless, dried the dishes, helped make batches of homemade cookies and many other household chores.

Donald is survived by his sister Carolyn Egan, brothers William (Mary Jo) Egan, Arthur (Edna) Egan and Clinton (Gayle) Egan and 12 nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by both his parents, siblings Marion (Richard) Finley, Frances (Emil) Hose and Stanley Egan.
