Dwaine Kenneth & Joy Nadine Stevens Obituary

Dwaine Kenneth Stevens and Joy Nadine Stevens were termed by themselves and all that knew them as “soulmates.” They met again at an Alamosa High School reunion and married May 28, 1983. Dwaine, born April 14, 1930 in Alamosa, Colorado died July 3, 2016. Joy Nadine Purdy Stevens, born August 27, 1929 in Antonito, Colorado died July 4, 2019.

Having lived many years in Mesa, Arizona where they enjoyed hunting for rocks, shopping flea markets and friendships with the snowbirds during the Arizona winters, their wish was that they be buried together. Dwaine’s special hobby was silver-smithing and teaching this special interest to his many students. He made rings, bracelets, slides and belt buckles still enjoyed by family and friends. Both Dwaine and Joy shared this pleasure of jewelry and collection, but Joy’s most loved hobby was reading her many books which became shared topics of discussion with her family and friends. She loved good food, socializing, dancing and had a wonderful smile that could light up a room.

After serving in the Air Force 1950 to 1955 the discipline and patriotism Dwaine learned never left him. Upon return to civilian life his occupation as a welder and pipefitter earned him distinction until his retirement.

Dwaine and Joy both were preceded in death by their parents, brothers, sisters and adopted son Shannon Stevens.

They are survived by children Mark (Peggy) Walton of Strafford, Missouri, Marla (Greg) Purcelley of Monte Vista, Connie Baumgardner of Cottonwood Falls, Kansas; Charlotte (Stanley) Ryel of Commerce City, Colorado; Donald (Winnie) Woodworth of Brighton, Colorado; along with several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

A celebration of their life together will be held at the Fort Logan National Cemetery in Denver, Colorado, 3698 South Sheridan Boulevard, on Tuesday, August 27, 2019 at 1:00 p.m. Please gather at Staging Area “B” by 12:45 p.m.
