Edith Meguire Obituary

Edith May Cherry Meguire, 91, of Brighton, Colorado, passed away peacefully on June 24, 2022, surrounded by several of her devoted children.  Edith was born in Rocky Ford, Colorado to Melvin P. and Gladys Loyd Cherry on February 19, 1931.  Edith was their third child of nine children, with one of them dying in infancy.  Edith lived most of her youth in Springfield, Colorado, where she later met and married James Morrison Humphrey, Jr. on May 31, 1946.  They continued to live in Springfield, where they had two sons, James Morrison Humphrey III (Jim) and Thomas Wesley Humphrey (Tom).

In 1950, they moved to Lewistown, Montana, where their only daughter, Mary Esther Humphrey, and their third son, Donald Merle Humphrey were born.  In 1952, after Don was born, they moved to Laurel, Montana where their remaining four sons were born.  They included William Douglas Humphrey (Doug), David Daniel Humphrey, Terry Lee Humphrey, and Robin Bruce Humphrey.  They spent several years in Laurel, Montana raising their eight children.  One of the things Edith was most proud of and talked most often about was raising eight remarkable children!

In 1962, they gathered up their eight remarkable children and moved to Brighton, Colorado.  There in Denver, Colorado, Edith received her GED and Cosmetology License.  Edith had several careers in her life.  She was always a mother, of course, her favorite and most meaningful career, sometimes a waitress, for several years, a hairdresser, and eventually, a school cafeteria cook for Brighton School District 27J at South Elementary and Northeast Elementary. She soon advanced to Food Manager.  She retired after twenty years (1971-1991) of dedicated service to Brighton School District 27J as Food Manager at Northeast Elementary,  She very much enjoyed the students' and teachers' many grateful compliments on the excellent lunches she provided for them everyday!  She was truly, greatly appreciated!  Much love and care went into each of those delicious school lunches she prepared for twenty years!

Edith was widowed, when her husband Jim passed away, after nearly 40 years of marriage, on November 16, 1985.  She spent the last two years of his life by his side, compassionately caring for him as his health declined. Some years after his death, she met and married Fred Zuniga of Brighton.  Edith and Fred spent their ten years of marriage traveling and enjoying their life together.  She was again widowed on July 15, 1999, when Fred passed away.   A few years later, she met and married William A. Meguire (Bill) of Brighton. Edith and Bill enjoyed dancing at all the local Senior Dances. After 19 years of marriage, Edith was once again widowed when Bill passed away on September 15, 2021.

Edith was an active member of Longspeak Church for many years. She also participated for several years in a performing Clogging Group in Brighton.  She was very proud of this group and it brought her a lot of joy!  Edith enjoyed reading, dancing, listening to all kinds of music, especially country, going out to dinner and holiday festivities with her children and grandchildren.  Edith was a remarkable mother and grandmother.  She had 13 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.  She was always very proud of them and would continually "sing their praises" to anyone who would listen.  She loved and thoroughly enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren!  Edith was a very bright light of kindness and love to everyone that knew her, for her entire life!  She will certainly be greatly missed by her beloved family and friends!

Edith was preceded in death by her three husbands and two children, Doug and Terry.  Her four sisters, Geraldine Miltenberger, Betty Gorges, Sylvia Clauson, and Frances Reisdorph preceded her in death, as well.

Edith is survived by her remaining children Jim (Linda), Tom, Mary, Don, David (Karen), and Robin (Lindy).  She is also survived by her three brothers, Raymond Cherry, Merle Cherry (Marianne) and Don Cherry.  In addition, she is survived by her 13 grandchildren and 27 great grandchildren.
