Edna Hunt Obituary

Edna M. Hunt, 89 of Brighton passed away on June 12, 2020 in Thornton, Colorado after a brave struggle with Alzheimer’s disease. Edna was born on March 3, 1931 in Hays, Kansas to Alois and Barbara Denning, she was raised with six siblings on the family farm in Hays, Kansas. She married Wayne Gustus in 1951 and they had six children together –Debra, Doug, Mary, Wayne, Tammy and Jody. Later she met and married Jack Hunt and together they raised Edna’s children along with Jack’s son Jimmy. Edna enjoyed working in her garden, embroidering tea towels, playing bingo and gambling trips with her family to Blackhawk. Edna had a passion for making food, especially her strawberry pies which she would make for family and friends. In the last two years she found a talent for painting pictures.

Edna’s strong work ethic came from living on a farm through the Depression during the Dust Bowl era of the 1930’s. She was very proud of her Kansas farm roots which would serve her well in later years. She moved to Colorado in the mid-sixties with six small children. Shortly after arriving she found herself as a single mother in an era that frowned upon strong independent women. Undaunted, she bought the restaurant Guys Kitchen in Brighton and with the help of her young children she worked the business seven days a week to make it successful. She married Jack in 1968 whom also helped immensely in the family restaurant.

Edna was ahead of her time, fierce, independent, and strong. If she wanted something, she worked tirelessly for it without being deterred from anything or anyone.  She will be missed.

Edna is preceded in death by her husband Jack Hunt, her son Doug, parents Alois and Barbara along with her brother Kenny and sister Dolores.

She leaves behind a family of five children: Debra Gustus, Mary Nazarenus (Steve), Wayne Gustus (Stacey), Tammy Parker (Daniel) and Jody Acklam (Carl).  11 Grandchildren, 19 Great Grandchildren and 1 Great-Great Grandchild. Along with her siblings Alvin (Aletha) Denning, Les (Mona) Denning, Rita Smith and Larry Denning.
