Ernest “Ernie” Kaska, aged 85, passed away on Sunday, September 10th after a short battle with cancer. He was a beloved husband, “Dad”, father-in-law, “Granddad”, brother, and friend. He was a man of great faith, who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Ernie was born on May 25, 1938, in Iowa City, Iowa to Frank and Helen Kaska and was the third youngest of 13 siblings. He was raised on the farm in East Pleasant Plain, Iowa. After he graduated high school, he did farmwork and then joined the army as a medic. He moved to Colorado in 1960 which became his forever home. He met Darlene and married on June 15, 1963. He attended the University of Colorado and later became a wildlife biologist at the Division of Wildlife for over 30 years. Throughout his career, he was known for his hard work, dedication, and passion for the great outdoors of Colorado. After retirement, he worked at a golf course and spent time with his grandchildren, who treasured him immensely.
While he was a quiet, humble, calming soul; he was the pillar of the family. His playful sense of humor endured others, even strangers to him immediately. In his free time, Ernie enjoyed being outside. He loved fishing, camping, yard work, woodworking, and CU Buffs football games. He was also an active and dedicated member of his church, Saint Augustine in Brighton, CO. He completed the Deaconite program and was a Cursillo leader, in Colorado Springs, for 14 years.
Ernie is survived by his loving wife, Darlene, his daughters, Amy and Julie, sons-in-law, Chris and Thomas, and his grandchildren, Evan, Grace, Christian, CJ, and Nathan. He had a special relationship with every single one of his immediate family members. His strong guiding spirit shaped the people his daughters, sons-in-law and grandchildren have become.
His memory will be deeply cherished by all who knew him.
A Rosary is scheduled for 10:30 AM on September 18th, 2023, followed by Mass at 11 AM at St. Augustine Catholic Church, 178 6th Avenue in Brighton, CO.
