John Martin Mumford

John Martin Mumford, 67, of Centennial, passed away February 8, 2016 in Lone Tree. He was born in November 1948 in Denver, CO to Herbert and Mary (Lauridson) Mumford. He attended public schools in Brighton and graduated from Brighton High School in 1966 and continued his education at Parks Business College and Orange Coast College in California. He started working for Thrifty Car Rental in California as a Manager, then moved to Summit County, CO in 1974 where he began working for the Colorado Department of Transportation.

After a vehicle accident in 1982, John worked hard in the passing of the Colorado Seat Belt Law and began his new career in Handicap Awareness Public Speaking where he spoke primarily at high schools. He took pride in teaching handicap awareness and seat belt safety.

A true Denver Nuggets Basketball fan at heart, John was a season ticket holder for roughly 30 years. He was responsible for the awareness of handicap accessibility to watch games. To prove his point, John attended every home game for 22 years.

Throughout his life John earned many awards for his efforts in safety; in 1990, he received the 9WhoCares Award for his work on the Colorado Seat Belt Law, the JC Penny Golden Role Award in 1991 for Public Handicap Awareness & Seat Belt Safety, the Colorado Life Savers Award through the National Highway Safety Administration in 1987 and the Hero Next Door Award from Channel 4 for developing programs to prevent injuries in Vehicles on Boards, Blades & Bikes.

John is survived by his children, Shane (Cindy) Glass of Alberta, Canada and Christina (Clay) Crist of Castle Rock; brother, Ray Mumford of Dillon; eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, February 16, 2016 at 11:00am at Henderson Community Church.
