Maria Gloria Nevins
Maria Gloria Nevins was born in Kingsville, Texas on July 21, 1937, to Bernabe Rodriguez and Carmen Garcia Rodriguez. She attended and graduated from HM King High School in Kingsville. Later, she married, honoring, an arranged marriage to Lionel DeLa Rosa. Together they had 7 beautiful children, Mary Lou, Richard, Larry, Tina, Kathy and her twin, Patricia and Daniel. Richard and Patricia passed away at infancy.
Her second marriage was to Bruce Nevins and together they had one child, a beautiful daughter, Jeannie.
Some of mom’s hobbies were, ceramics, sewing, fishing, cooking and gardening and she was good at it all. She loved growing her hot, HOT peppers, pepenitos and oranges.
At an early age, she had a love for music and could sing and harmonize, beautifully. Her dad used to say she was his “little singing bird.” One of her favorite songs “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” was from the movie, “The Wizard of Oz.” When she was in 3rd grade, she learned the words to it and would sing it over and over again. Another favorite song, same song, was “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” by Israel Kamakawiwo, a beautifully remade version that she absolutely loved singing to, as well. She, mom, loved to sing!
I have fond memories of Mom’s voice filling our house at Christmas time with songs like “Silver Bells” and “White Christmas” and her trying to teach us kids how to sing.
