Remembering María del Socorro Medina Astorga

 María del Socorro Medina Astorga, the sixth of seven children born to el coronel Luis Medina Arreola and Úrsula Astorga Barrera was born in San Luis del Cordero, Durango on June 15, 1948. More affectionately known as Socorro by close friends and family, she would continue to live with her parents and siblings in this small picturesque municipality, previously a part of what was known as La Hacienda de San Isidro de Trincheras until her marriage. 

When Soccorro was eight years old, her family travelled to a nearby town, San Pedro del Gallo, where her grandparents lived.  Her grandfather was ill, and her mother wanted to help take care of him.  It was there that destiny would put a young boy not much older than her in her path.  Unbeknown to her, this young boy would become the love of her life.  The memory of this encounter is still vividly imprinted in the mind of Don Jesús.  “The moment I set eyes on her, he said, I knew that this would be the girl I would marry.”  What could have caused such a great impression on this young boy, still in the prime of his innocence?  Perhaps it was a sparkle in her eyes, or maybe it was her captivating smile, a characteristic which would come to define her throughout her life.

Jesús and Socorro would not cross paths again until seven years later.  By this time, both were well into their adolescent years.  Once again, Don Jesús shares, “Upon seeing her again, I immediately recalled our first encounter.”  Now 15 years old, he boldly told her, “We are still too young to marry, but once we’re old enough, I would like to marry you.”  It was destiny that allowed them to cross paths when they were both children and it would be destiny that would unite them a few years later.  Jesús José Martínez Pedroza and María del Socorro Medina Astorga married on February 8th, 1969, both were just over 21 years old.  

The young couple adjusted well to married life and they would adjust well to being parents.  Their first child was a baby girl, Angélica Odilia, born just before their first anniversary.  Five years later the young family moved to the United States and settled in Brighton, Colorado.  Three years after that, in 1977, their son, Luz de Dios, was born and two years later, in 1979, Their youngest son and last child, Jesús José was born.  Both Jesús Sr. and Socorro were loving and affectionate parents.  They agreed that Jesús would be the main bread winner and Socorro would stay at home and dedicate herself to the upbringing of the children.  The idea was to give the children a solid foundation that would prepare them to succeed later in life.  Except for 1980, when the family returned to San Luis del Cordero following the death of Socorro’s mother (they would remain there for four years), they would make Brighton their life-long residence. 

Socorro was a joyous woman.  She loved being a wife and a mother and loved doing for her family.  She loved to sing.  According to Angélica, she had the ability to memorize the lyrics of songs, particularly, classic songs from her beloved México.  She was also a great multitasker, able to do many things at the same time…tend to the kids, maintain the household, and prepare great homemade meals all at the same time.  There is nothing that would give her more satisfaction than to make sure that her husband and children were well fed.  Another way to demonstrate her love for them, she would cook and bake some of her specialties which she knew they would love.  Some of these included: rice, enchiladas, tacos soups, tamales (often prepared these for her boys to take for lunch), and cemitas, a Mexican wheat bread.  When her grandchildren began to arrive, Socorro’s ability to love and give of herself would only grow stronger.  Her grandsons: Levi, Vance, Maverick, and Cougan brought her much happiness.  “If my mother could be surrounded by her boys all the time, she would be happy,” Angélica shared.

Family was very important to Socorro.  It was not unusual for her to call a relative in Mexico or in California.  She most certainly kept in touch with local relatives.  Socorro was very social and had a generous spirit.  Her captivating smile would immediately win people over.  According to Angélica, her mother would carry a bag with her and was always prepared to share an apple or some other goodie with someone who she felt might need a snack.  She would walk to St. Augustine to attend daily mass and would often end up leaving with one of her church friends to enjoy a cup of coffee and fellowship, they would later drive her home.  Socorro was loved by all with whom she came into contact.  

In her later years, Socorro would begin to suffer from the effects of Diabetes and other ailments.  She would spend time between her home and Angélica´s home where she would receive loving care from her daughter.  Being a devout Catholic woman, Socorro had great faith in God and knew that he was watching over her.  On Saturday March 20, 2021, God gently reached out to Socorro and took her home.  She left this earth peacefully and surrounded by her loving family.

Socorro is survived by her husband, Jesús José Martínez Pedroza, her daughter Angélica, sons Luz (Heidi), and Jessie (Robin), her grandsons Levi, Vance, Maverick and Cougan, extended family throughout the United States and Mexico and many friends.  She will be greatly missed by all but will be remembered with affection because of her kind and giving spirit and, yes, that captivating smile.

María del Socorro Medina Astorga, la sexta de siete hijos nacidos al Coronel Luís Medina Arreola y Úrsula Astorga Barrera nació en San Luís del Cordero, Durango el 15 de junio de 1948.  A quien con mucho afecto sus amistades y familiares le llamaban Socorro, llegaría a vivir en este pequeño municipio, anteriormente parte de la Hacienda de San Isidro de Trincheras hasta el día de su matrimonio.

Cuando Socorro tenía ocho años, su familia viajó a un pueblecito pequeño no muy lejos de donde vivían, San Pedro del Gallo, lugar donde radicaban sus abuelos maternos.  Su abuelito se encontraba enfermo y su mamá quería ayudar a cuidarlo. Fue ahí donde el destino pondría a un muchacho joven, no mucho mayor que ella, en su camino.  Sin saberlo, este muchachito llegaría a ser el amor de su vida.  La memoria de este encuentro aún sigue grabada en la mente de Don Jesús, “Desde el momento que le clavé la vista, sabía que llegaría a ser mi esposa.”  ¿Qué pudiera haber causado tan semejante impresión en este niño que se encontraba en su plena inocencia?  Quizás fue el resplandor de sus ojos, o tal vez aquella sonrisa cautivadora, característica que la llegaría a identificar a través de su vida.

Jesús y Socorro no volverían a cruzar senderos hasta siete años después.  Para entonces, ambos se encontraban en sus años de adolescencia.  Una vez más, Don Jesús relata, “Al volverla a ver, inmediatamente recordé nuestro primer encuentro.”  Ya quinceañero, este joven atrevido le dijo, “Aún estamos muy jóvenes para contraer matrimonio, pero cuando tengamos la edad apropiada, me gustaría casarme contigo.”  Fue el destino que les permitió cruzar senderos cuando ambos eran niños y sería el destino que los uniría para siempre algunos años después.  Jesús José Martínez Pedroza y María del Socorro Medina Astorga se casarían el 8 de febrero de 1969, ambos contaban con poco más de 21 años. 

La pareja joven se ajustó muy bien a la vida matrimonial, e igual, harían buen ajuste a la vida como padres.  Su hija Angélica Odilia, nacería poco antes de su primer aniversario.  Cinco años después, la familia joven se mudaría a los Estados Unidos y establecería su hogar en Brighton, Colorado.  Tres años después, en 1977, nacería su hijo Luz de Dios.  En 1979, nacería su hijo menor Jesús José jr., este niño completaría la familia Martínez Medina.  Tanto Jesús como Socorro llegarían a ser padres amorosos y consentidores.  Decidieron que Jesús aportaría los recursos económicos a la casa y Socorro sería ama de casa encargándose de la crianza de los niños.  La idea fue de proporcionarle a estos niños un cimiento sólido que los prepararía para tener éxito más adelante.  Con la excepción de 1980, cuando la familia tuvo que regresar a San Luis del Cordero después de la muerte de la madre de Socorro (permanecerían ahí por cuatro años), radicarían en Brighton el resto de la vida de Socorro.

Socorro fue una mujer alegre.  Era feliz como esposa y madre y le satisfacía servir a su familia.  Le gustaba cantar.  Según Angélica, tenía el don de memorizarse las canciones, en particular, aquellas canciones clásicas de su querido México.  También tenía la habilidad de llevar a cabo distintas tareas simultáneamente: atender a los niños, sostener el hogar, y preparar unas comidas deliciosas…todo esto a la misma vez.  No había otra cosa que le trajera más satisfacción que el hecho de asegurarse de que su marido y niños estuvieran bien alimentados.  Por medio de la preparación de platillos que les agradaban, ella sentía demostrar su amor por ellos.  Sus especialidades incluían: arroz, enchiladas, taquitos, caldillos, tamales (le gustaba que sus muchachos llevaran para comer después), y cemitas, un pan rico Mexicano de trigo.  Al empezar a darle la bienvenida a sus nietos, su habilidad de amar y de dar de su persona se fortalecería aún más. Sus nietos, Levi, Vance, Maverick, y Cougan la llenarían de felicidad.  “Si mi madre pudiera estar siempre rodeada por sus muchachos, sería feliz,” comparte Angélica.

La familia era muy importante para Socorro.  No era inusual que le llamara a algún familiar en México o en California.  Pero sin falta, mantenía una comunicación abierta con sus familiares locales.  También era muy social y tenía un espíritu bondadoso.  Su sonrisa cautivante se ganaba a cuanta persona que cruzaba su camino.  Según Angélica, su mamá cargaba una bolsa consigo en donde cargaba frutas y otros antojitos para compartir con quienes ella sintiera que necesitaran un bocadito en algún momento.  Caminaba a la iglesia de San Agustín para asistir a las misas entre semana y, muy seguido, después de la misa, resultaría en la casa de una de sus compañeras en donde llegaría a disfrutar de un cafecito y una plática amena, después sus amigas la llevarían a casa.  Socorro se ganaba el cariño de todos quien la llagaran a conocer.

Años después, Socorro llegaría a padecer de los efectos de la diabetes y otros malestares.  Pasaría tiempo entre su casa y la casa de Angélica en donde su hija la consentiría y cuidaría con mucho amor.  Una mujer entregada a sus creencias católicas, Socorro tenía mucha fe en Dios y sentía que él cuidaba de ella.  El sábado 20 de marzo del 2021, Dios, con mucha ternura, le extendió los brazos a Socorro llevándosela a su gloria.  Socorro partió de este mundo con mucha tranquilidad y amor rodeada por sus seres queridos.

Las personas que le sobreviven incluyen a: su esposo Don Jesús, su hija Angélica, sus hijos Luz (Heidi) y Jessie (Robin), sus cuatro nietos Levi, Vance, Maverick, y Cougan, familiares en Estados Unidos y México y muchas amistades.  Se le extrañará mucho a Socorro, pero se le recordará con mucho cariño por su espíritu caluroso y bondadoso y, sí, también por aquella sonrisa cautivante.
