Marilyn Gail (Sargent) Schupp, formerly Burnett, age 81, of Hopewell Junction, New York, passed away on September 18, 2025, surrounded by family after a battle with Alzheimer's disease. Born in New England, Marilyn was the daughter of Winifred and Kimball Sargent of North Attleboro, Massachusetts, both of whom, as well as her three brothers Erick, Royal, and Kimball predeceased her. Like many in the family, she was affectionately known as “Sarge” to her friends in her early years. Marilyn was also preceded in death by her second husband, Rudolf Schupp, and stepson, Thomas Schupp.
Marilyn was devoted to her family, and her life was centered around love, care, and service to those closest to her. She dedicated much of her life to caring and spending time with her children, grandchildren, and aging or disabled relatives. Her commitment to family was unwavering, and unquestionably her favorite chapter in life was during the years she was able to spend time with her grandchildren.
She is survived by her first husband, Thurlow Burnett, her two sons, David and Erick Burnett, daughter-in-law, Claire Burnett, stepchildren, Eric and Cindy Schupp and Nicole (Schupp) Burian, and numerous grandchildren. In her final chapter, the anticipation of meeting her expected twin great-grandchildren brought Marilyn moments of true happiness, even amid her struggle with Alzheimer's.
In addition to her family, Marilyn had rich and fulfilling passions and pursuits. She earned a degree in Physical Education (P.E.) from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and taught middle school P.E. until her two sons were born. Later, she became an avid youth soccer coach and played a pivotal role in the early growth and development of the East Fishkill Soccer Club. Marilyn assisted with the start of the Under-8 instructional level intramural teams and assumed the role of Travel Division Director for the competitive teams, where the coaches (mostly) affectionately referred to her as “The Queen of Travel.”
A lifelong learner, Marilyn’s had a deep interest in genealogy and spent years researching her family’s history, tracing roots back to the 1600s and 1700s. She also embraced technology in the early days of the personal computer and internet, often being ahead of the curve in adopting new technologies. In her honor, the template for this text was prepared using artificial intelligence, a perfect example of a new technology she would have enjoyed learning about.
Her life, full of love, dedication, and a passion for learning and service, leaves a lasting legacy for her family and community. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to an Alzheimer’s or Multiple Sclerosis charity in her memory.
