Muriel Bennett Obituary

Our dear mother Muriel (Miller) Bennett passed away on August 3, 2023, at the age of 92. She was a wonderful wife, mother and grandmother, who was always there when we needed her. She also had many friends and was well-loved by all who knew her.

Muriel was a native Coloradoan, born in Denver, Colorado to Paul S. Miller and Lucille B. (Custy) Miller and was the oldest of two siblings. Her family owned the general store in the Barr Lake area where she grew up and attended Barr Lake Elementary School, then graduated from Brighton High School in 1949.

She married Orvan Bennett on October 14, 1950, transitioning from city life to farm life. Not an easy challenge considering their first home had only an outside water pump and an outside toilet. Some thought this life might be too difficult for her, but she made the transition with grit and grace proving her tenacity for life. A year later, they built their family home in Fort Lupton, Colorado where they would spend the rest of their lives. They grew soybeans, corn, wheat, raised cattle, chicken's, pigs, horses and five children. After the passing of her husband, she formed a partnership with her children to run the farm. She served as President of the partnership up until her passing.

Muriel worked as a school secretary at North Junior High and Brighton High School. Music was her joy in life, and it presented many opportunities for her. She gave piano lessons to earn extra money when her children were small, she was also the organist and choir director at St. Augustine in Brighton for many years. She played her violin with the String Colors Group, The Mostly Straus Orchestra and Fine Arts at Four. She was also a charter member in the Mini Mama miniature group and created many small scene rooms that told stories of her life. In her retirement years, she loved to travel with Orvan in their RV and take an occasional gambling trip up to Blackhawk with her friends. She always managed to bring home enough winnings to pay for the next gambling trip.

Muriel is survived by her four children; Karen Beeson, Steve Bennett (Christy Pfost), Kristie Bennett (David Mathews), Lynn (Shawn) Haggerty; along with seven grandchildren, Mike (Jenny) Burris, Ashley (Austin) Armstrong, Kendra (Jason) Cross, Jennifer Voss, Erin (Guy) Coshall, Mary Mathews and Mark Mathews. She also had 6 great grandchildren, Maren, Maddalyn, Taylor, Adrian, Hadley and Beau. She also welcomed into her heart three step grandchildren; Megan (Richard) Smyth, Brittnee (Ryan) Coyne and Kaitlin (Zach) Ehlenbeck and two step great grandchildren; Leo and Lily. She is preceded in death by both her parents; her brother Paul Miller; husband Orvan; and son Jim.
