Philip Carney Obituary

Philip J Carney, the son of Mary Antonia Skulj and Francis Joseph Carney, was a third generation Coloradan.  He was born at St Joseph’s Hospital in Denver on December 31, 1941.  Because his parents had lost their first spouses, the blended family into which Phil was born had eight children.  His parents were to divorce, his mother remarried and had a son, and Phil’s siblings totaled nine.  Two survive:  Dorothy Kennedy Tirone and Valentine Leiker.

Phil was raised in North Denver and graduated from Cathedral High School.  He joined the United States Air Force, was medically discharged, and began a thirty-five-year career with the US Post Office.  He married Elaine Maybury on February 19, 1966 and became father to Philip II, Christopher, Brian, and Tara Carney.  A home was purchased in June, 1967 in Adams County, north of the Perl Mack suburb of Northglenn.  He continued to live in his home until he died.

Phil Carney was very involved in his church, Immaculate Heart of May in Northglenn, and in the Boy Scouts of America as a child and an adult.  He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council #7502 and a 4th Degree Knight.  He was appointed and elected as the councilman of Ward III on Northglenn’s City Council and served thirteen years on Northglenn’s Urban Renewal Board.

Phil loved to travel.  Commencing with tents, a pop up, then travel trailers.  He and his family visited forty-six of the lower states in summer camping trips.  He and Elaine then traveled by air, bus, and cruise ships to forty-five countries.  By his final Royal Caribbean cruise, they had achieved a Diamond Plus rating!

Phil was the grandfather of Gregory, Joshua, Timothy, Danielle, and Olyvia Carney.

He was the father-in-law of Kelli Carney and Michelle Jewby, the brother-in-law of Patricia DeRock and David Maybury, and uncle to many dear nephews and nieces, especially Michelle DeRock.

Phil was interested in family, Catholicism, friends, America, history, genealogy, social gatherings, and eating crab legs, bacon, fried chicken, ice cream and brownies!
