Raymond Vigil Obituary

Raymond David Vigil

Raymond David Vigil, 71, passed away on October 6, 2023. Born on April 2, 1952, in Brighton, Colorado, his parents were Fidencio Vigil and Lillian Gonzales. He was the second child of six and the eldest son. He tragically lost his father, at the age of 9, due to a motorcycle accident and this would have a major impact on his life. Growing up he spent a lot of time with his grandparents, following Catholic sacraments, helping raise his younger siblings and attending school. At the age of 17 he enlisted in the Navy and served proudly for 10 years.

His time in the service included harsh Vietnam Combat on the following battleships. USS UNION (1969-1970); USS WASHOE COUNTY (1970-1971) and the USS ST. LOUIS (1971-1973). His final battleship, the USS CARPENTER (1977-1979), included the final ranking of Petty Officer III E4. His medals achieved were a National Defense Service Medal; Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Navy Achievement Medal; Navy Good Conduct Military Medal and Ribbon; Navy Reserve Medal; and National Defense Service Military Medal and Ribbon.

During his last years of service, he met Teresa (Montano) and while still on active duty, had their 1st daughter Natalie, in December of 1978. Soon after, he moved to the Reserves and settled down in Brighton. In October of 1982, their 2nd daughter Nadine was born. He was Honorably discharged from service and pursued a career in Automotive Mechanics.

Raymond was always, always fixing things. A jack of all trades; he was called upon to help in any situation to fix anything.  His love for cars had a great influence and impact on the younger generation. He loved building things, whether it be model airplanes and cars; go-karts out of lawnmowers; or rebuilding engines. His love for his children and grandchildren was overwhelming. He was always willing to do what he could for them, whether it be teaching them to ride a bike, helping with school projects, or picking them up from school. In his most recent years, you didn’t see Raymond without Peanut, and he loved that chihuahua like a grandkid.

Raymond Vigil is survived by his two daughters Natalie Vigil and Nadine Vigil: four grandchildren Ritchie Vigil, Lluvia Vigil, Jonathan Vigil-Ponce, and Juliette Vigil. Three sisters, countless nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is preceded in death by both parents and two brothers.

Raymond was funny and charismatic. He always smelt good, always had on his Cowboy Boots, and didn’t go anywhere without a hat. He was loved and adored by many, and he will be truly missed.
