Velma Madrid Martinez

Velma Madrid Martinez was born on December 4, 1939, in Taos, New Mexico to Albino and Evilia Madrid. She was the oldest of seven children. In 1951, Velma moved with her parents to Brighton, where she attended school, worked, and lovingly helped her parents raise her younger siblings.

In 1960, she met the love of her life, Ernesto Martinez, and they were married on July 22, 1961. Together they shared 51 years of marriage until Ernesto’s passing in 2012.

In 1964, Velma and Ernesto welcomed their first child. Velma devoted the early years of her marriage to being a homemaker and raising their five children. She was a supportive, loving, and faithful wife and mother who always led by example. She never complained, even through life’s challenges, and remained a steady source of encouragement and strength for her family.

Ernesto was a true entrepreneur, opening several businesses throughout his life, and in the early 1980s Velma began working alongside him. Whether managing their second-hand store, helping in their television repair shop, or working in the kitchen at their restaurant, she was always his quiet and steadfast supporter—never seeking recognition and never wanting to be in the spotlight. She was the silent strength behind their shared success.

Even while supporting her husband in business, Velma always made time for her family. She cherished spending time with her mother, sisters, children, and grandchildren. She was deeply devoted to her role as a grandmother, always encouraging, guiding, and supporting the next generation. Velma was a wonderful listener—someone many people confided in and often sought out for advice.

In her free time, she attended church retreats, traveled, and remained an active supporter of her faith and church community. She enjoyed cooking, shopping, and watching Hallmark movies.

Velma’s greatest joy was her family. Her legacy is one of faith, humility, kindness, and unconditional love.

Velma is survived by her five children: Paul (Silvia), Amy (Chris†), Lynn (Tony), Ernie (Anna), and Ben (Lori); 19 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; four sisters, Francis, Annabelle, Lorine, and Delilah; and one brother, Dennis.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ernesto; her parents, Albino and Evilia Madrid; and her sister, Debby.

Her quiet strength, unwavering faith, and unconditional love will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
