January 29, 1943 - August 16, 2020
Walter Scherk was born in Yugoslavia (what is now Croatia) to Maria and Antone Scherk on January 29th, 1943. He was the second youngest of seven children. Walter was eight years old when he and his family immigrated to the United States in 1952 to escape the ravages of war-torn Europe and to flee communism. After arriving in New York City, Walter and his family relocated to Broomfield, Colorado and eventually settled in Brighton, Colorado.
Walter graduated from Brighton High School in 1962. Two years later, he enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served for four years as a Security Policeman. He was honorably discharged in 1968 while holding the rank of Sargent. Following his discharge, Walter was granted U.S. citizenship.
After completing his military tour, Walter worked as a security guard at the Rocky Mountain Arsenal. Years later, he pursued a career as a tile and flooring installer, an occupation he engaged in until retirement.
Walter is survived by his brother Frank Scherk and by numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, by sisters Maria Skinner and Anna Fellinger, and by brothers John Scherk, Antone Scherk JR., and Eric Scherk.
In life, Walter was kind and generous. He was a devout Catholic who regularly attended Mass at St. Augustine’s church in Brighton. Walter always enjoyed the company of family and friends. He also enjoyed fishing, especially at Lake McConaughy, watching sporting events, and visiting the canyon country of Utah. He will be missed by many, but not forgotten.
