Waqi was born in Lahore, India to Elijah Daniel Mohammad Shafi and Winnifred Shafi and was the second youngest of five brothers. He married the love of his life, Yasmeen M. Shafi on October 31, 1965.
Waqi graduated in 1962 in Lahore with his bachelors degree.
Waqi spent the beginning of his life in Karachi, Pakistan, where he worked at the British Consulate in immigration. Waqi and family migrated to the United States in 1986 and settled in Denver, Colorado where he worked for Goodwill Industries for 25 years and was highly respected in the community that he worked in.
Waqi spent the next part of his life building roots in his community and would find himself vacationing quite often, visiting friends and family throughout the world. He was very involved in the Christian church, which led him to publish his first novel in 2017. His faith in God remained strong until his last moment on earth, which he spent surrounded by his loving family.
Waqi is survived by his youngest brother, Shajji Shafi and three sons, Elijah Shafi and family, Salim Shafi and family, and Amer Shafi and family. Waqi had in total 18 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
He is proceeded in death by his parents, Elijah Daniel, Mohammad Shafi and Winnifred Shafi, his wife, Yasmeen M. Shafi, and his three brothers, Rafi, Sami and Tali Shafi.
